The Google Maps search bar accepts much more than just postal addresses. GPS coordinates, Plus Codes, place names, parcel numbers: each query format returns a different level of precision. Mastering these formats allows you to locate a house in seconds, even when the address is incomplete or poorly referenced.
Plus Codes and GPS coordinates: locating a house without a postal address on Google Maps
Traditional postal addresses often fail for new constructions, hamlets, or parcels in rural areas. Google Maps then geocodes the centroid of the municipality, sometimes several kilometers away from the targeted property.

The most straightforward solution is to enter decimal coordinates (latitude, longitude) in the search bar. The accepted format is of the type 48.8566, 2.3522 – with a point as the decimal separator and a comma between the two values. The marker will then be accurate to within a meter.
When you do not have coordinates, the Plus Code (or Open Location Code) takes over. This short alphanumeric code (example: 8FW4V75V+8Q) designates an area of about three meters by three. It appears in Google Maps by clicking on any point on the map and then checking the information panel. To find a house on Google Maps when the address is missing or approximate, asking the seller or agent for the Plus Code removes any ambiguity in geolocation.

We recommend always verifying the result by switching to satellite view. An address may be geocoded to the correct section of the street but on the wrong side of the road, which skews the analysis of the immediate environment.
Correcting or adding a missing address in Google Maps
A property located in a recently delivered subdivision or at the end of a private road does not always appear on the map. Google Maps offers a little-known contribution tool that solves this problem.
Procedure on mobile to reposition a marker
- Open the Contribute tab, then select Edit map and Add or correct an address.
- Move the red marker directly onto the roof of the targeted house using the satellite view.
- Provide the street number and street name, then submit the modification. Validation by Google usually takes a few days.
If the house is at the end of an unmapped road, you must first report the missing road via Contribute, Edit map, then Add or correct a road. Draw the access path, wait for validation, and then attach the house address to this road. Without this prior step, the address creation will be refused.
This action is not reserved for property owners. A potential buyer can submit the correction so that the property then appears in all their searches and routes.
Street View and satellite mode: checking the actual condition of a house from Google Maps
Satellite view alone is not sufficient to assess a property. Aerial images may be several months or even years old. We regularly observe newly renovated roofs or extensions missing from the satellite image while they are present in the listing photos.
Utilizing temporal layers in satellite view
On Google Earth (desktop version), the historical images feature allows you to go back in time and compare the evolution of the built environment. This check reveals unreported modifications: added pool, constructed annex, cleared vegetation.
On Google Maps mobile, Street View mode remains more reliable for judging the exterior appearance. Drag the yellow figure (Pegman) onto the adjacent street. If multiple Street View covers exist for the same street, a date bar appears at the bottom of the screen. Navigate between the views to observe changes.
Analyzing orientation and sunlight exposure
The compass integrated into Google Maps (visible at the top right on mobile, activated by a two-finger rotation) indicates true north. In satellite mode, north is always at the top of the screen by default. Locate the main facade of the house and deduce its exposure.
To go further, observe the shadows cast in the satellite images. Long shadows on the north side confirm a midday shot in our latitudes, which helps validate the actual orientation of the garden or terrace.
Filtering Google Maps search results for real estate
Typing “house for sale” in Google Maps returns a mix of agencies, Google Shopping results, and local listings. Searching by specific address or Plus Code remains the most reliable method to reach an identified property.
To explore a neighborhood without a specific address, we recommend a different approach. Zoom in on the target area in satellite mode, then use the “Search in this area” function that appears at the top of the screen. Type a contextual keyword (school, bakery, bus stop) to map the amenities around a restricted perimeter.
The save a place function (bookmark icon) allows you to create a list of identified properties. Create a dedicated list (“House search”) and add each virtually visited address to it. Each entry retains the coordinates, satellite view, and a direct link to Street View, which avoids having to redo the search in each session.
Google Maps does not replace a physical visit, but it significantly reduces the number of unnecessary visits. A poorly oriented property, one that is isolated or bordered by noisy infrastructure, can be spotted in two minutes on the map. Focus your visit slots on houses that pass this initial mapping filter.
